McLaren has announced a strategic shift in its Formula 1 approach, prioritizing Lando Norris over team-mate Oscar Piastri as the team aims for both world championships this season. Despite this change, team principal Andrea Stella emphasized that any support for Norris will be aligned with the team’s principles of fairness and sportsmanship.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Stella outlined the team's stance: "Our goal is to win, but we want to achieve that victory in the right way." Norris is currently 62 points behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the drivers' championship, with 232 points still up for grabs this season. Piastri is in fourth place, 106 points behind Verstappen.

Stella explained, "We will prioritize our support for Lando, but it must be done without compromising our core values. Our principles dictate that team interests come first, and maintaining sportsmanship is essential. We also want to ensure fairness to both drivers."

Previously, McLaren allowed Norris and Piastri to race each other freely, but recent events, including a controversial Italian Grand Prix at Monza, prompted a reassessment. In Monza, despite Norris and Piastri qualifying first and second, Piastri overtook Norris on the first lap, which ultimately allowed Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to come between the two McLarens. Leclerc went on to win the race, while Norris and Piastri finished second and third, respectively.

Stella noted, "We don't want to see scenarios like Monza, where we start P1/P2 and finish P1/P3. This situation is detrimental to the team, and we need to address it." He outlined three key objectives moving forward: ensuring that on-track actions do not harm the team's interests, striving to win both championships with mutual driver support, and avoiding reckless tactics.

Despite Red Bull’s dominance earlier in the season, with Verstappen securing seven victories, they have struggled recently, failing to win for six races. This has led to increased competitiveness from McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes.

Stella revealed that both McLaren drivers have embraced the revised approach. "The discussions have been very collaborative," he said. "Even when I asked Oscar if he would be willing to forgo a victory for the team, he agreed, recognizing the importance of the team's overall success."

Stella did not specify the exact measures to be taken in favor of Norris but stated that any decisions would be made based on the situation at hand. He also emphasized that Norris is supportive of the team's strategy, expressing that he prefers to win on merit rather than through orchestrated team interventions.

Looking ahead, McLaren's primary focus remains the constructors' championship, where they are just eight points behind Red Bull. Stella cautioned against losing sight of the team’s broader goals: "While our focus is on the drivers' championship, we must not neglect the constructors' title, which is also a key objective."

Stella clarified that the team's new approach, referred to as "papaya rules," is distinct from the previous informal guidelines. The "papaya rules" simply remind drivers to avoid unnecessary risks and maintain respectful racing between themselves.

As McLaren gears up for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the team hopes that this strategic shift will enhance their chances in the championship battles while maintaining their commitment to fairness and sportsmanship.
