The Liberal Democrat party has seen its membership almost halved over the past five years, falling from just under 118,000 in 2020 to 60,000, according to BBC analysis of party figures.

The drop comes despite the Lib Dems’ most successful general election ever in terms of seats won. A party spokesperson highlighted that more people are backing the Lib Dems in actual elections, even as paid-up membership declines.

The party saw a membership surge in 2020 during the Brexit debate, but numbers have since dwindled. The decline has been partly masked by the inclusion of “registered supporters” in annual figures—free sign-ups who cannot vote in leadership elections or influence policy.

Professor Tim Bale, who leads the Party Membership Project, said the decline was surprising given the party’s electoral performance but noted that public profile surges don’t always convert into long-term membership.

In contrast, the Green Party of England and Wales has seen its numbers soar to 90,000 members, a 91% increase since 2020. Other major parties have also experienced membership shifts:

  • Labour: Down 37% since 2020, with around 333,000 members reported last year.

  • Conservatives: 131,680 eligible voters in the 2024 leadership contest, 40,000 fewer than in 2022.

  • Reform UK: Just under 260,000 members, according to its website ticker.

Despite declining numbers, Lib Dems remain highly active: research shows 19% of members canvassed voters, the highest rate among UK parties.

A party spokesperson said:

“We have a record number of MPs, the most popular party leader, and more councillors than Labour or Conservatives. In elections, more people are backing the Liberal Democrats than ever.”
