Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has lost parental responsibility for his two children after the UK High Court ruled in favor of his ex-wife, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein. The court found that the Sheikh engaged in coercive and controlling behavior, making Princess Haya the sole decision-maker for their children’s education, healthcare, and overall well-being.
High Court Grants Princess Haya Full Parental Responsibility
In a landmark ruling, Sir Andrew McFarlane, the UK’s most senior family court judge, declared that Sheikh Mohammed had abused his former wife and created a hostile environment. Princess Haya fled Dubai in 2019, citing fear for her life, and took refuge in the UK with her children:
Al Jalila (14 years old)
Zayed (10 years old)
The Sheikh initially sought their return to Dubai but later agreed to their stay in England. However, he has no face-to-face contact with the children, with communication limited to phone calls or indirect methods.
Court Exposes Sheikh Mohammed’s History of Abuse
During the hearings, the court was presented with evidence of Sheikh Mohammed’s past actions, including the forced abduction of his daughters, Sheikha Latifa and Sheikha Shamsa. Both princesses were taken against their will and returned to Dubai, reinforcing concerns about human rights violations within the royal family.
Judge McFarlane ruled:
The Sheikh’s behavior towards Princess Haya amounted to domestic abuse.
His actions were beyond the norm of family court cases.
His wealth and power posed an ongoing threat to his ex-wife and children.
Princess Haya’s Statement After Winning Custody
Following the ruling, Princess Haya expressed her gratitude, stating that her children are not pawns in a power struggle. She praised their bravery and resilience throughout the legal battle, saying:
"There are no words to describe the love, respect, admiration, and pride I have for the two bravest souls of all, Jalila and Zayed."
Record-Breaking Divorce Settlement
In December, the UK High Court awarded Princess Haya a £251.5 million settlement, covering:
Luxury property maintenance in London and Surrey.
Security expenses for protection against potential threats.
Travel and lifestyle costs, including vacations, staff salaries, and armored vehicles.
Care for the children’s ponies and pets.
